Weekend mornings in October smells like fresh-cut grass, cinnamon kettle corn, and someone’s backyard BBQ drifting through the air. There’s a rhythm to it: kids in costumes, folding chairs near the soccer fields, handwritten signs pointing to the pumpkin patch.

We’ve packed this issue with that same energy: local gems, fall traditions, and a fundraiser that’s doing real good close to home.
So scroll through, pick your favorite, and maybe meet us there?

In today’s Scoop:

  • ⛳ Swinging for a Cause

  • 🪔 Diwali Shines Statewide

🍢 Backyard BBQ Meets Grandma’s Kitchen

956 W Foothill Blvd, Claremont, CA

Bulan Filipino Grill may be small in size, but it’s packing big flavor. This family-run spot serves up the kind of food that feels like it came straight from someone’s kitchen: crispy lechon kawali, smoky skewers with garlic rice, and perfectly fried lumpia that disappear too fast.

The portions are hearty, the prices fair, and the welcome as warm as the food. A real treat for Claremont. Learn more here.

🎈 Where Kids Climb, Jump, and Giggle

529 S Glendora Ave A, Glendora, CA

Stay and Play has become a favorite spot for families, especially when it comes to birthdays. The space is bright, clean, and full of energy with a ball pit, maze, trampolines, and climbing areas that keep little ones busy for hours.

The owners are known for their kindness, helping parents set up, decorate, and feel at ease. On non-party days, walk-ins can enjoy unlimited playtime! Learn more here.

⛳ Golf Tournament to Support Rare Heart Condition Research

The Gist: A Piece of My Heart Foundation will host its fifth annual Charity Golf Tournament and Auction on Friday, Oct. 24, at San Dimas Canyon Golf Course. The day includes an 8 a.m. shotgun start, followed by a luncheon and silent auction. Proceeds will fund research on CPVT, a rare heart condition that took the life of 14-year-old Morgan Danielle Manning.

Why it matters: This event turns loss into hope, helping advance research that could save lives. Registration and sponsorship details are at apieceofmyheart.life.

🪔 California Declares Diwali a State Holiday

The Gist: California has officially recognized Diwali, the Hindu “Festival of Lights,” as a statewide holiday beginning January 1. Signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom, the new law allows state employees to take the day off and grants public school students an excused absence to celebrate. Schools and colleges can also choose to close.

Why It Matters: The move honors the state’s vibrant South Asian community and ensures those celebrating Diwali (and related observances by Sikhs, Jains, and Buddhists) can fully participate in the traditions of light, joy, and togetherness. Read more here.
